How to Quit Smoking?

Rajan was from a Christian family. He was brought up in a Christian atmosphere. For higher studies, he went to college in the nearby city and stayed in a hostel. In the beginning he prayed and read the Bible daily. 

After a few months, Rajan stopped his religious activities. He acquired some friends. All his friends were smokers and they introduced him to smoking. In the beginning he smoked for company and please his friends. But as years passed by, he became addicted to the habit. He wanted to quit smoking as it was harmful, expensive and displeased his parents. But he could not stop smoking. His life became very pathetic. He wanted to quit smoking but could not leave the bad habit.

Today there are millions of young people like Rajan who are addicted to smoking. They want to quit smoking but they find it very difficult to do so.

The addictive nature: Cigarette smoking leads to addiction similar to drinking, drug abuse and sexual habits. All smokers want to stop smoking but are unable to shake off this bad habit. Do you know the reason behind the addictive nature of smoking?

During a puff about one to two milligrams of nicotine is absorbed in the blood and it stimulates the pleasure centres in the smoker, producing a pleasant effect. At the same time, it increases the alertness and increases the performance of the smoker. The pleasure centre in man gets programmed to enjoy the pleasant effect of smoking and the kick produced by nicotine. This programming in the pleasure centre, forces the smoker to smoke again and again leading to addiction. So smoking becomes a habit after some time and the smoker finds it difficult to kick off smoking.

The cure for smoking:  Dear reader, you may be a victim to smoking habit and you may want to be a victor over smoking. You can quit smoking without visiting a doctor or taking pills. You can avoid wasting millions of rupees on the harmful habit and avoid deadly diseases and miserable illness. There is one who is willing to help you to overcome this bad habit. He can help you. St Paul wrote in Phil 2:13. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” and in I Cor 15:5. “Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”.

You can say like Paul, if you believe that Jesus can help you, and yield your life to Him. Jesus said about addiction. Mostly assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin”. John 8:34.

So if you are a slave to the habit of smoking, Jesus can give you victory over this bad habit. The Bible says, “Therefore if the Son (Jesus Christ) makes you free, you shall be free indeed”. John 8:36. He is willing to forgive your sins and give you victory over this harmful habit. Are you willing to come to Him for victory today? Jesus calls you come to Him for freedom and rest. “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My Yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My is light”. Matt 11:28-30. Will you come to Him and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour today?
