Importance of a Family
Every year the fifteenth of May is considered as the International day of the family. Last year (1994) was declared as the year of the family to focus on the importance of family and children.
Abraham Lincoln understood the importance of young people. So he wrote about young man as, “a person who is going to carry on what you have started. He is going to sit where you are sitting, and when you are gone he will attend to those things which you think are important. You may adopt all the policies you please, but how they will be carried out depends on him.
He will assume control of your cities, states, and nations. He is going to move in and take over your Churches, Schools, Universities, and Corporations. All your books are going to be judged by him. The fate of humanity is in his hands”.
Hence the family has a major role in moulding and raising the young people. Let us see the importance of family in producing future leaders for our country.
- For the education and protection of the race: Family is a social agency for the education and protection of the race. The child learns his first lessons of discipline and socialisation at home.
- For acquiring good qualities: In the family the child acquires good qualities like sincerity, humility, love, gentleness and realises his responsibility.
- For developing the personality: In the family the child gets the free expression of thoughts and the development of his personality.
- For acquiring good attitudes and behaviour patterns: The family is the place where the attitudes and the behaviour patterns of a child are formed and shaped. He learns table manners and the way in which he should do certain things only at home.
- For the values and skill development: It is the family where the child learns many skills. In the home, his good attitudes, ideals and values are formed.
- For meeting all needs: The family gives all the physical cares that a child needs. The family provides the physical cares like personal hygiene, toilet habits, cleanliness, regular diet habits, good speech and correct pronunciation.
- For security and safety: The home is a place of security and safety, where his physical, mental, and spiritual needs are met.
- For moulding his character and qualities: In the home, the character of the child is moulded. His leadership qualities and talents are also developed at home. So the family plays a major role in developing these qualities and the character of the child.
- For acquiring good habits: He learns good hobbies and picks up good habits only at home. So the parents need to lead a model and challenging life to them.
- For getting love and affection: Important good qualities like love and affection for a child, is available only in the home, for which he naturally longs and searches for. So the parents must shower their love and affection at home on the children.
