What Should I Do to Love My Wife?

A middle aged Christian officer, once approached a pastor and said, “Pastor I am a believer. I loved my wife before my marriage very much. I married her because of her appearance and her good status in life. After a married life of six years, I find it very difficult to love her now”. The pastor wanted to know the reason behind the problem. So he asked, “Why do you think that you are not able to love her now?” The officer answered hesitantly, “Once she appeared as the most beautiful and well placed angel. But now I find her always to be dominating and quarrelsome devil. How can I love her and live with her?”

The pastor looked at the officer and said “There is only one way to solve this relationship problem”. “What should I do to love my wife?” asked the officer. The pastor replied, “You won’t be able to love your wife. But you can love her with God’s help. In the passage where the Bible commands husbands to love their wives, there is another commandment. It is the command to be filled with Holy Spirit Eph 5:18. When you surrender your life completely to the Lord, you will be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that the outcome of the coming of the filling will be that you can easily ‘love your wife as Christ loved the Church’ Eph 5:25.

On that day the officer understood the need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. He knelt beside the pastor and surrendered his life to the Lordship of the Holy Spirit. Later he went away happily praising God. From that day onwards, he was able to love his wife whole-heartedly. 

Later his wife also accepted her weaknesses. She began to willing respect and submit to her husband. There was a marked change in their family life due to the continuous filling of the Holy Spirit of both the officer and his wife daily. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is the only solution to the relationship problems in the family life.
